I know it's early but I have booked 20 rooms for the 2012 Manitoba Marathon at the Comfort Inn South (same hotel as last year) in Winnipeg for those wanting a room. Rooms are first come first serve. Please let me know know if you would like one as I will be making up a room list to send in by May 16, 2012. Rooms are $122.99 per night (2 double beds, non-smoking)and are reserved for the night before the Manitoba Marathon (Saturday June 16). I will be displaying a room list on the right hand side of this blog soon.

Volleyball Valley Champs Results

Both teams represented Benito well this past Tuesday at Valley Champs with very good results. The boys lost to ESRSS in the semi-finals and the girls lost to Minitonas in the the championship final. Congrats to both teams on a great season and as always, thank you for your hard work, dedication and awesome behaviour thoughout the season. Thank you again!

Volleyball Valley Champs

Volleyball Valley Champs are on Tuesday November 29 with boys and girls playing at SVRSS from 9:45 to 6:00. Students will be bussed there and back. The Tiger's Den will also be open for those who wish to purchase snakcs & drinks throughout the day.

Girls play at 10:30, 12:45, 2:15 and playoffs games begin at 3:45.

Boys play at 11:15, 12:00, 1:30, 3:00 plus any playoff games that are earned. Playoff games begin at 3:45.

Christmas Gift Exchange

If your child in Grade 56 is wanting to be a part of the Christmas Gift Exchange, please have your $10 in by Friday December 2nd to Mr Moncrief. A letter was sent home detailing how it is being done this year so please ask for the letter from your child if they have not shown it to you yet. This activity is optional and students do not have to participate if your family chooses so. Again, due date is December 2 for your $10 to be in to Mr Moncrief for the Christmas Gift Exchange.

Soccer Valley Champions!!

Congratulations to the Benito Cobras on successfully defending the Soccer Valley Championship today at Rotary Fields in Swan River! The Cobras finished first during the round robin and then defeated Birch River in the semi-finals to advance to the Championship Final to face Minitonas. They then defeated them 2-1 to bring home the banner for the 2nd straight year. Congrats to all the players: Kirsten, Austin, Chayce, Conner, Claudine, Carson, Joanne, Tyra, Kristen, Dean, Branden, Clayton and John. You did an amazing job all day long and represented our school well with your positive attitude & sportsmanship. A great day indeed!

Grade 5/6 Soccer Jam

Soccer Jam is on Wednesday September 28 at Rotary Fields in Swan River. Students from grades 5-8 will be bussed there at 9am and back before busses leave at the end of the day. Kids have received their schedules and are responsible to bring that day to help them ensure they get to each of their games.

There will be at canteen there that day selling hotdogs ($1.50), juice & water ($1.00) and bake items ($0.50 - $1.00). Students are able to bring their own lunch, water and snacks if they wish. Please dress for the weather - cold or warm. Thank you!

On Thursday June 23, we will be having Manitoba Marathon photos for everyone involved in this year's Manitoba Marathon - Super Runners, 10k-ers, relayers and halfers. You are asked to have the following items at school first thing in the morning:

Super Runners - running clothes, running shoes, bib and Super Run hat
10k-ers - Race Day clothing, running shoes and bib
Relayers - Race Day clothing, running shoes and bib
Halfers - Race Day clothing, running shoes, bibs, medals and Half Marathin T-shirts

Sunburn Classic - May 20

Our first track meet is this Friday at SVRSS. All students have filled out their event sheets and will be participating in the events they have selected. Participation in the Sunburn Classic is part of their Physical Education mark as is the Valley Champs Track Meet.

There will be a canteen available but I strongly suggest that everyone bring snacks and water to keep hydrated. The weather is forecasting +25 so it should be a warm one. Also bring sunscreen to protect the skin, a hat for shade and a good attitude. I will post a schedule if I can get that done in time. Any questions, please contact me.

A big congrats to our Benito Cobras Badminton Team as they came very close to bringing home the banner. We had many successes today. Here are the results:

Boys Singles - 3rd Place - Tristin
Boys Doubles - 2nd Place - Kyle & Nicholas
Girls Singles - 1st Place - Kirsten
Girls Doubles - 2nd Place - Halle & McKenzie
Mixed Doubles - 2nd Place - Morgan & Sydney

You all did great and represented our school very well. Our team finished with a total of 51 points while ESRSS & MMYS finished with 52 points in a tie for for 1st Place for the Valley Championship - having 3 teams that close together is what a championship is all about! We may have finished on the outside looking in but cannot be disappointed with our performances. Excellent job everyone! A team photo will be available in the Cobras Sports section in the near future. Thanks again for a great day everyone!

Poster Contest Winners

This past week we had a visit to the school from the Royal Purple who presented a few of our students with certificates & prizes for the Healthy Choices poster contest. Our poster subjects this year were based on drugs & alcohol. In the Junior category (Grade 5/6), Madison won first place and Shynnelle won second place. In the intermediate category (Grade 7/8), we had three winners: 3rd Place was Sydney, 2nd Place was Blaize and 1st Place went to McKenzie. Congrats to all of you and thank you to the Royal Purple for offering this poster contest to our students.

Whether you do or do not qualify for the Badminton Valley Champs, please keep in mind that you still have a Badminton Night you can attend and win ribbons.

Badminton Nights & Valley Champs

Our annual Badminton Nights for Grades 5-8 are fast approaching. Each grade gets a night to play singles, doubles and mixed doubles. The Badminton Nights take place at SVRSS starting at 5:00pm and lasting until about 8:00pm depending on the number of participants that night. The dates are as follows:

Monday April 25 = Grade 5
Tuesday April 26 = Grade 6
Wednesday April 27 = Grade 7
Thursday April 28 = Grade 8

Students may move up a grade to play if they cannot attend their own night but keep in that you may not move down a grade level to a previous night. Which means Grade 8 students can only attend their own night.

The only other badminton available to the Grade 7/8 students is the Valley Champs but they must qualify from our school to attend. There is only room for 4 girls and 4 boys on the badminton team. Playdowns begin next Monday at noon hour for those interested in trying out. Hope to see a bunch of you there as we try to get another banner for Benito School!

Today we had Twyla Machan from the Star & Times visit our school to do a story on our involvement in the Manitoba Marathon. She interviewed several kids and took some photos of us running! Look for an article in next week's edition of the Star & Times to see some of Benito's marathoners in action!

SUPER RUN - Please have your entry fee in by Friday April 15 so I may complete our registrations this coming weekend. We need to register together in order to be placed in the same waves (departure times). The fee is $15 if registered by April 24.

RELAY - I do not need your registration fees until a later date as the fees for school groups in the relay event remain the same until race day.

HALF MARATHON - If you want me to register you please send in your fee by Friday April 15 so I may do so this weekend. The fee is $35 (for youth) if registered by April 24. You may also register yourself online at the Manitoba Marathon website if you want. Either is fine.

Basketball Valley Champs - Results

This past Tuesday, our teams entered the final tournament of the season with our Valley Championships. The boys played great finishing the round robin with a 2-1 record which put them in a 3-way tie for first with Minitonas and ESRSS having lost to Minitonas by 6 and winning against ESRSS by 1. Unfortunately when it came down to points for and against, we were on the outside looking in and missed being in the Championship game by only 5 points thus ending our season but ending on a very high note.

As for the girls, they finished the round robin 3-1 with their only loss coming to ESRSS whom they would face again in the Championship game for the banner. In the final game our girls played their hearts out going up early thanks to their press and didn't look back. They earned the title of Valley Champs with a 23-17 victory over ESRSS.

I would like to thank both teams for a great season of good play, sportsmanship and fun. I would also like to thank and wish good luck to our Grade 8 players who move onto SVRSS as you continue your basketball days with the JV Teams. These players include: Kyle, Morgan, Keegan, Tyler, Halle, McKenzie, Sydney and Katie. Good luck to you all and thank you for making our basketball program a success once again.

As with volleyball, if any parents / players have any photos they are willing to share please let me know as I would love to see some of them and have a few photos as I coached both teams and rarely had chances to take photos.

Parents & students are reminded to make sure you are dressed properly for tomorrow's ski trip to Thuderhill. Also, be prepared for regular classes if we have to cancel / postpone tomorrow's trip because of the weather. Please send a lunch (preferably nothing that needs to be warmed up) tomorrow in case we are at school. Again, be prepared for regular classes as we are at Mother Nature's mercy.

Our season ending Valley Champs is on Tuesday March 1. A schedule for the day's games are located to the right in the "Basketball Schedules" section. Please take a look to see when your child plays. That day only the Grade 7/8 students will be attending. A copy of the schedule will also be sent home with each player.

The girls schedule is still under construction as one of the teams scheduled to attend has dropped out as of today. I will pass along a schedule as soon as one is available.

Grade 7 Basketball Jam

The schedule for this event is located in the "schedules" box to the right if you would like to see it and a copy will be sent home with each student participating. This event is during the day which means students will be bussed there and back. Please send a bagged lunch or some money for lunch/ snacks as there will be a small canteen available with hot dogs, popcorn and drinks. Also, that day is "Pink Shirt Day" also known as National Bullying Awareness Day and Minitonas will have pink t-shirts for sale for $5 each if any students are interested.

The Grade 5/6 Basketball Jam schedule is located to the right under "Basketball Schedules" if you would like to look at it. We have 2 teams this year.

Team 1 - Noah, Clayton, John, Cody, Isaac, Ryland
Team 2 - Madison, Dean, Matthew, Kristen, Branden

Each will receive 6 games throughout the evening. Our first game is at 5:00pm sharp - please be there at ESRSS (Junior High in Swan River) by 4:50pm at the latest. Last game for Team 1 is at 7:30pm and for Team 2, their last game is at 7:45pm. Schedules were sent home with players today except for those missing from school today. I will bring jerseys for everyone to wear. Good luck Cobras!

Broomball Bash 2011

On February 9, the Grades 5-8 students participated in a Broomball Tournament as part of their Physical Education classes at the Benito Recreation Centre. Students were divided into 6 teams: The Chili Dogs, The Weirdos, The Skunks, The Thundercats, The Gangstas and The Hippies. The round robin was played cross ice with the final played full ice. Everyone played in the final as we created 2 super teams from the 6 that were involved. Thank you to the canteen staff for being open all day for us! Hopefully this can become a yearly event! Family Camp

We will leave at 1:40 and return from SVRSS at 8:00pm which means back in Benito by about 8:30ish. We will be bussed there and back. I will hand out schedules as well early next week.

Grade 5/6 Basketball Jam

Grade 5-8 Ski Trips

Broomball & Curling Volunteers Needed

On Wednesday February 9 we are having a Grade 5-8 Broomball Tournament and on Friday February 25 we are having our annual Grade 5-8 Cobra Curling Classic at the Benito Rec Centre. We are hoping to have the canteen open for the participants that day. We are looking for a few volunteers to help out in the kitchen those days. If you think you would be able to help out please contact me or Mrs. Negrave at the school. Thanks!

Also, we are hoping to put an adult on each broomball team next Wednesday so if you are available and want to give broomball a try, please contact me at the school or by email so I can include you on a team. If that's not your cup of tea, come down and watch the action - everyone is more than welcome! Hope to see some of you there!

Basketball 1 - January 28

The schedule for both boys & girls is located to the right under the Basketball Schedules section. Both teams play 2 games on Friday with each game lasting 1 hour (4 x 10 minute quarters). Players are asked to be prepared for Friday as we will try to leave the school before 9:00am to get there early because the boys play their first game at 9:45am. All games are at SVRSS and the canteen will be open for those wanting to purchase snacks.

Also, permission forms for basketball season have gone home and need to be back by Friday morning before we leave for Swan River. These forms cover all the basketball games & tournaments throughout the entire season I have scheduled on their schedules (hopefully the players have brought theirs home already). Thanks!

We are in need of drivers for our exhibition games in Minitonas on Monday January 17. Girls play at 4pm (leave at about 3pm) and boys play at 5pm (leave after school). Grade 5 Enrichment

Students in Grade 5 have an opportunity to attend an enrichment where they will be able to sew a back pack for physical education classes. Students who showed interest are asked to have a letter made up and handed in to Mr M by Thursday Jan 13 explaining why they think they should be able to attend. There is room for 2 participants. If there are not enough Grade 5 students interested, the spots will be offered to any Grade 6 students interested. The cost is $10 per student and bussing arrangements will be made through the Bus Garage.

Skating & Broomball

Just a reminder that the Grades SK - 4 will be skating this Friday and Grades 5-8 will be playing broomball. All students must have a CSA approved helmet to participate - no exceptions. We do have a small supply of helmets to be used but cannot guarantee a helmet for everyone as the sizes do vary (most are smaller sizes).

Grades 5-8 students are encouraged to wear knee pads under/over their pants and wear shin guards if you have. These are not mandatory but will help in case you fall. Should be fun!

Congratulations to Halle for placing first in the annual Remembrance Day Poster Contest in the black & white category.

Congratulations to McKenzie for placing first in the annual Remembrance Day Poster Contest in the colour category.

Both posters placed first in the Swan River area (Benito, Bowsman & Minitonas) and now move on to Grandview to be judged at the district level in early January.

Gr 6/7 Mini Volleyball - December 13

The Grade 6/7 Mini Volleyball Night has been re-scheduled for Monday December 13 at SVRSS from 5:00pm - 7:45pm. Students will be receiving their schedules Thursday December 10. Schedule is different as 1 team from another school had to drop out and the night ends earlier than the previous schedule. Players are responsible for their transportation there and back. I can take 4 players in but cannot bring them back - I already have 2 coming with me. If I said I would give you a ride for the previous Grade 6/7 Mini Volleyball Night, please check in with me again to make sure I have room still. Christmas Cheer & Hamper

Students are reminded to bring their items for the Christmas Cheer and Hamper by Friday December 10. As a bonus, Student Council will be participating in certain tasks such as a Disgusting Food Challenge and Kiss a Pig. If you want to see them do those things, get those items in... plus all the items will go to families who need a little extra help this coming holiday season. If a 1000 items are brought in, I will even shave my HEAD!

Valley Champs Volleyball Results

We wrapped up our volleyball season today with the annual Valley Champs tournament at SVRSS and the Cobras represented Benito very well! Not only did we show great sportsmanship and great behaviour but we were able to bring home some hardware! The boys placed 1st in the round robin, defeated Bowsman in the semi-final but fell to ESRSS in a 3 set thriller! The boys were awarded the finalists plaque that will be displayed in the trophy case beginning tomorrow. The girls finished 2nd in the round robin, defeated ESRSS in the semi-finals and came out victorious against Minitonas in the finals which was also a 3 set thriller! Congrats to all players and coaches on a successful season. We hope you enjoyed your volleyball this year!

On that note, I would like to say thank you to our Grade 8 players who have now played their last volleyball season here at Benito School. Thank you to Katie, Halle, Sydney, McKenzie, Kyle, Nicholas, Keegan, Tyler and Morgan for your efforts, dedication and all the laughs along the way. SVRSS will be very lucky to add you to their volleyball programs as we will miss you next season. Good luck and congrats to everyone again.

Valley Champs Volleyball

Our annual season ending Valley Champs is set for Tuesday November 30 @ SVRSS. We will be bussed there and back leaving at 9:00am and our return time depends on our play during the day. Boys are scheduled to play at 10:10, 11:30, 12:50 and 2:10 on Court 1 with girls playing at 10:10, 12:10, 1:30 and 2:50 on Court 2. The Tiger's Den will be open orbring your own snacks / lunch. All players have received a schedule to take home. Please remember your shoes, shorts and knee pads (if you have knee pads). Good luck to both teams at the Valley Champs!

Rick McElroy Invitational Results

Congrats to both boys and girls on their performances at this past weekend's Rick McElroy Invitational Volleyball Tournament. The girls played well but didn't make it out of the re-pool games as we lost a few of our split games. On the other hand, our boys nearly went undefeated all day to capture the Championship in a 3 set thriller over The Pas after defeating Minitonas in the semi-finals. Congrats to all players on their fine performances and are reminded that only 2 weeks remain in the season as we build towards Valley Champs. Stay focussed and keep up the ever improving play!

Our annual Rick McElroy Invitational Volleyball Tournament is this coming Saturday November 13 with the girls playing at SVRSS and the boys playing at ESRSS @ Taylor School. The schedule for boys and for girls is located to the right of the posts in the volleyball schedules (slide show of schedules). Each player attending the tournament will receive their schedule to bring home tomorrow but you can take a sneak peek at it right now if you like. Girls play their first game at 9:40am at SVRSS and I am asking that they be there by 9:15am so they can stretch to be ready for the first game of the day. Volleyball 1

Congrats to both boys & girls on their showings at today's Volleyball 1 tourney. Both teams had successes and have some skills that need some fine tuning. I would like to congratulate my girls team on serving a perfect game as no one missed a serve for an entire set! Can't say I have had that happen before at Benito School. Way to go! I hope everyone enjoyed their day and are ready for tomorrow's tournament in Gilbert Plains. We also have our home Swan Valley tournament next Saturday November 13. A schedule will be coming early next week.

Here is the schedule for this Saturday's tournament in Gilbert Plains. Unfortunately, the draw could not be changed so we are stuck with a game at 8:45am that morning. My suggestion is to leave Benito by 7:00am so we are there somewhat on time and maybe a bit early. The schedule is not the most desirable for us but we will make the most of it. Between games, we could head to Dauphin for some food and window shopping if we like. I believe we are all covered for rides there and back, so if you need a ride please let me know and we'll work something out. Good luck girls!

Volleyball in Grandview

Congrats to both the boys and girls on their performances in Grandview yesterday. You played hard and well during your games. I believe we learned a lot and figured out some of the skills we need to work on which means we are going in a positive direction as the season continues. The boys made it to the semi-finals and the girls made it to the tournament final with both teams falling short to the host teams. I hope you enjoyed the experience and feel proud about how you played and represented our school. Go Cobras!

ESRSS, Pelly, Volleyball 1 and Gilbert Plains

We have a busy volleyball coming up and need some help with getting to & from events. We are hoping some parents are available for providing rides to these events.

1 - Wednesday Nov 3 we are at ESRSS and are hoping to leave the school by 3:30.

2 - Thursday Nov 4 we are at Pelly and are hoping to leave right after school.

3 - Friday Nov 5 we are at Volleyball 1 in Swan River. Boys at ESRSS and girls at SVRSS. The bus will take us there at 9:00am and return us back in time to catch the busses at 3:30pm

4 - Saturday Nov 6 we are in Gilbert Plains and will be leaving early that morning (dare I say 7:00am, really... 7am :P)

Grandview Volleyball Tournament

Players have been given a schedule for our upcoming tournament in Grandview. We play our first games at 9:40 so we will need to leave Benito at 7:30am so we are there by the time the first game starts. This will allow us time to stretch out and wake up as the first game of the day is always the toughest. We will meet at the school and head out from there. Each player is responsible to pay their $5 entry fee to their respective coaches. We will bring the jerseys and warm-up balls. Students are responsible for their own snacks and meals during the day whether those are packed or bought at the event. Any questions / concerns please contact me. Thanks!

School Clothing Orders

Our clothing orders have arrived! All orders have been sorted and handed out to thos who placed orders. I suggest that each student put the name or initials on the tags as there lots of those shirts and shorts in the school. This way they know which shirts and shorts belong to them and make it easy to return to the owner if left behind somewhere. Thanks for your orders and let me know what you think of them!

Geocaching

Some folks from Riding Mountain National Park will be coming to Benito School tomorrow to do a session with the Grades 1-4 in the morning followed by a session with the Grades 5-8 in the afternoon. It should be an intersting and fun day of using the GPS to find locations and things!

Soccer Enrichment

This Friday, our Grades 5-8 students will take part in an enrichment by attending a Provincial High School Championship Soccer Game in Swan River. SVRSS is hosting this year's Rural Soccer Provincials at Rotary Fields and is a great opportunity for these young, enthusiastic soccer players to get a feel of what this could be like a few years down the road if they choose to play soccer once they are at SVRSS. The timing has turned out great as both the boys' & girls' teams play at 12:30pm at Rotary Fields so they will get the choice of watching either the boys or girls play - Boys are ranked 5th out of 10 teams and the girls are ranked 4th out of 10 teams. Also, a former Benito Cobras plays on the girls team... Megan Oag. It should a neat experience for all attending. Forms have went home and most have been returned, just waiting on a few still.

Kids have been informed that seating will be limited so bring a blanket or camping chair to sit on. Bring your own lunch if you like. There will be a canteen available to purchase food at and the canteen list can be found at the link below. We will depart from Benito School at approximately 11:30 and return to school in time for busses. Bring your noise makers!! (No whistle please - pots, pans, drums, etc are welcome!) Should a great time!

Jest Stix Coming to Benito School

This Thursday (October 14) we will have Mr. Isaac Girardin coming in to demonstrate and teach the students how to use Jest Stix. What's this all about...

Jest Stix juggling sticks are a truly unique juggling tool. Originating over 5000 years ago in both ancient Egypt and China, juggling sticks have crossed cultural and physical boarders across the world. Now being reintroduced to western Canada, Jest Stix style juggling sticks are quickly showing kids how they can learn to juggle with one of the worlds oldest sport and art forms.

Each class will get one Physical Education period to get instruction and time to use the Jest Stix. Should be pretty cool to see and use! Check out the You Tube video of Isaac shiowing off his skills...
